Assembled by Professionals
Hand-assembled by trained experts in-house, our Ford 9-inch third members are built from quality components with an exact step-by-step process. We bring this combination of precision assembly and quality components to you at a price that can’t be beat. We trust these third members so much, they’re the go-to choice for our own rides, from the street to the track.
Tough, Nodular Iron Center Section
Our Ford 9 Inch Nodular Iron Third Member Center Section Carrier starts with a NEW casting with over 4 lbs. of additional material in critical areas. Nodular (ductile) iron is much more resistant to fracturing than OEM “gray” iron. Extra ribbing reinforces the case and rearmost pinion support (pilot bearing).
Thick, forged steel bearing caps surround the carrier bearings, all securely held in place with precision Grade 8 cap screws. The improvements continue with rugged billet steel adjuster nuts and heavy-duty keepers to ensure your ring gear settings are maintained. All mounting surfaces are precision machined to ensure a consistent, flat surface for a positive gasket seal (no more leaks on your shop floor). An oil fill plug is included.
Precision Assembled for Proper Ring Gear Teeth Pattern
Getting a proper pattern on the ring gear teeth is crucial. Our time-proven, step-by-step process ensures the correct backlash, preload, and proper amount of pinion shims to ensure the correct pattern on the ring gear teeth. Our gears use use cold-rolled 8620 steel, known for its long-wear and durability.
To ensure a proper gear pattern, we use a stronger “Daytona” style pinion bearing support to maintain that critical pinion depth setting. Stronger due to its larger bearings, our Daytona pinion support also uses the spacer-and-shim setup to maintain critical pinion depth settings under high load, unlike traditional crush sleeves which often compress further, take out your preload and lead to failure. With solid bearing spacers and the proper shims, we eliminate this problem and make setting preload easy and repeatable during installation, service and gear changes. Since preload is already set, simply torque the pinion nut to 160 ft./lbs. and you’re good to go. The pinion gear is connected to our new, forged steel “Ford short”, 1310-type pinion yoke.
Clutch-Style Posi Differential with Proven Performance
Our clutch-style posi differential gives you maximum traction. Based on the original limited-slip designs of the OEMs, these differential units provide the added benefits of experience over millions of miles and decades of proven reliability. A clutch-style operation means no clicking around corners and our posis feature heat-treated spider gears in a forged steel case. We’ve taken this posi to the next step in performance with increased clutch pressure and holding power, suiting it well for heavy-duty street car applications.
This differential has performed well in our Week to Wicked 1952 Chevy Truck, handling the job of transferring a 430 HP GM Performance LS3 to the ground.
- Clutch style, spider gear differential = proven reliability
- Spring-loaded clutch pack with improved grip over OEM designs
- Ideal for street tires and medium horsepower applications
- Housed in a Fully Machined, Reinforced Forged Steel Case
Proven Reliability
We run what we sell. Our third member units are the go-to choice for our own rides and we have built these units to last with high quality hardware and components. Tapered steel roller bearings minimize friction, better handle thrust loads and increase load carrying capacity. The ring gears are assembled with Grade 9 bolts with a tensile strength of 180,000 psi, a 15% increase over Grade 8 hardware. Heavy duty Grade 8 carrier cap bolts, a lock-style pinion nut with pre-applied Loctite and high-quality grade 5 pinion support bolts make our third member near-bulletproof.
Units include a Viton® pinion seal providing long lasting oil and chemical resistance. This seal retains elasticity up to 399°F (204°C) and intermittently up to 600°F (316°C) This high temp seal helps eliminate pinion leaks, reduces maintenance and keeps the third member properly lubricated. A carrier-to-housing gasket is available separately.
Our hand-assembled Ford 9 inch third member assemblies are made-to-order. We keep a supply of the most popular gears in stock, with most units built within 2-3 days. Our third-member units are shipped in a durable, reusable poly storage case, perfect for keeping multiple gear sets stored and ready for the track.

Brake Kit
- Disc Brake Stopping Power at a Great Value
This economical disc brake kit for Ford 9 inch and 8 Inch axles is simple to install and provides big stopping power, at a price nearly the same as replacing original drum brakes. That Ford rear end handles the power to make it go, but these binders clamp down when you say whoa! Today’s average family sedan can stop from 60 MPH in 120 feet, at nearly 1G of deceleration. You need the same stopping power. Your passengers, you and your car deserve the confidence of disc brakes and our kit delivers that confidence with exceptional value.
- Superior to Drum Brakes
Aftermarket disc brakes are superior to original drums in many ways: more braking force, less brake fade, and easier service. Stopping power starts with our newly manufactured GM Metric D154 style single piston calipers, commonly found on 1978-88 GM G-Body and A-Body cars. Large 11-1/4” diameter, 1” thick vented rotors provide more stopping leverage than common 9” or 10” drum brakes. Brake pads are easier to change than drum shoes, and our brake kit includes a street-friendly organic compound for long rotor/pad life. Replacement pads are common sized, available from your local auto parts store. Looking for more aggressive stopping power? We carry race-grade D154 disc brake pads that drop in just as easily.
- Fits Ford 9 Inch and 8 Inch Housings
This disc brake kit fits Ford 8 inch axles, as well as passenger car Ford 9 inch axle housings with “big bearing” ends (3.150” O.D. bearing, found on passenger cars from 1974-79). Included bracketry will adapt this kit to both “new style” and “old style” Ford 9 inch housing flanges with the 3/8” bearing retainer bolt holes. Bracket spacers are also included, allowing this kit to work with axle flange offsets of 2-3/8” or 2-1/2” common on Ford 9 inch passenger car rear ends. Axle flange offset is measured from the axle housing flange face (with bearing retainer removed) to the axle shaft flange face (side where the brake rotor/drum rides, including the thickness of the axle flange).

Brake Pad Identification and Friction Surface Options Explained
Looking for some great street or racing brake pads for your muscle car, truck, or race car? You’ve come to the right place. From stock GM metric calipers used in plenty of disc brake conversions and in some classes of oval track racing to full on “big brake” packages, at some point in your vehicle’s life you’re going to need new pads. It doesn’t matter if you’re upgrading for a weekend track day or your race car’s pads are shot and need to be replaced before the next Saturday main event, we have what you need here at Speedway Motors.
If you’re trying to match up a new set of brake pads and you’re unsure which Wilwood caliper you have, the pad infographics shown below provide the dimensions of each pad, along with the caliper that it will fit. For OE-style calipers it helps to know the Friction Materials Standards Institute (FMSI) D-number. You can usually find this number somewhere on the pad backing plate or edge of the friction material. For example, GM’s extremely popular 1977-1988 “metric” calipers use a D154 pad. No matter the brand or friction material/compound, the D154 denotes the actual fitment to that caliper.
Wilwood Disc Brake Pad Offerings
- ProMatrix– Street performance/OEM replacement pad that is quiet-running with low dust, and low rotor abrasion. Fade resistant dual sport pad for street cars that autocross or do on-track events, as well as trucks that tow or have oversize wheels/tires. Popular for drag racing and off-road.
- PolyMatrix Q– Used with aluminum rotors in Sprint or Midget racing. Q pads are a ceramic formula to be quiet and low dust, with a smooth engagement.
- PolyMatrix E– Used with iron or steel rotors. Very consistent driver feel through entire operating range. Excellent street pad that can be used for track days and autocross, but also works well off-road and for drag racing.
- PolyMatrix B – Used with iron or steel rotors. Medium-high friction, good cold response. A race only pad popular for road courses, dirt and paved oval track, and off-road use, which works good at low temperatures but gets even more aggressive as it gets hot.
- PolyMatrix A– Used with iron or steel rotors. Very consistent driver feel through entire operating range. Wilwood’s most aggressive pad for road course, paved oval and dirt.
- SmartPad BP-10, BP-20, BP-30, BP-40 – These pads get increasingly aggressive as the numbers go up. BP-10 is usually what is included in Wilwood street brake kits. BP-20 is more aggressive. BP-30 and BP-40 are serious race pads, for professional road racing and asphalt oval track, and need to get hot before they really work well
